-
Markstage
Visual editor
A visual editor for Astro: writers edit on the site’s real design; content stays Markdown and JSON in git.
-
Prismic
Hosted CMS
A hosted page builder: nothing to run, and your developers build the sections (slices).
From the full comparison; each number links to its source.
Prismic is a hosted headless CMS with a drag-and-drop Page Builder built on "slices", the reusable sections your developers make. Markstage covers the same ground for Astro, with one big difference: your content stays as Markdown and JSON files in your own git repository, on your own server.
Who each one is for
Prismic suits teams that want a hosted service with a page builder, a CDN, an API used by many front ends, and plans that grow with users and locales.
Markstage suits Astro sites that want page building and releases without a hosted database, per-repository fees or plan limits on users, locales and environments. Markstage is pre-release.

Where Prismic is stronger
- Hosted, with a CDN and image processing; nothing to run.
- Many front ends. One API can serve sites, apps and other channels.
- A mature page builder with many customers and case studies.
- Enterprise services: SSO, backups, uptime SLAs and support plans.
Moving from Prismic to Markstage
Prismic content has to become files. Markstage reads a repository through Prismic's API, new after 0.3.0: each custom type goes to a collection, rich text becomes Markdown, images come through the Prismic CDN, and each slice type you map becomes a section of your page; the rest are marked for review. A dry run shows the whole plan first, everything arrives as a draft, and running it again only updates what changed (it remembers each document id). Each slice type becomes a section type in your Astro components and Markstage block pack, so writers keep building pages from the same sections. It is tested on recorded API answers, not yet on many real repositories.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free Prismic alternative?
Markstage is free to self-host, with no per-user, per-locale or per-environment fees. Prismic also has a free plan, for 1 user and 2 locales. WordPress and Ghost are free software you can host yourself; see Markstage vs WordPress, Markstage vs Ghost and the comparison of all four.
Does Prismic work with Astro?
Astro's docs list Prismic with community resources, such as a livestream and its repository. There is no official Astro integration listed there.
How much do Prismic environments cost?
On 3 November 2026 Prismic's pricing page listed a development environment as a paid option on Platinum ($675 a month, per repository, paid yearly) and two environments on Enterprise. Markstage's staging and production are included.
Can Markstage do slices?
Yes, in its own way. A site's section types play the part of slices; the Library holds reusable and synced sections; and writers drag them onto the live page.
Does Markstage have a Prismic-style MCP server?
Yes. AI agents connect through Markstage's MCP server as the person whose token they hold. They draft changes; a person reviews and publishes.
